After a volley of gunshots disturbed the relative quiet on Dundonald Hill, St James, early yesterday, killing 23-year-old Asward Wiltshire, police had trouble finding his body.

In the end it was his sister who discovered him laying dead in bushes a distance away from his home.

“I was looking for him,” said the sister. “When police came they said they could not find his body, and while we were looking in the bushes I saw one of his slippers. That was when I found him.”

The sister said she immediately alerted the police who cordoned off the area and began investigating his death.

Newsday was told, at about 5.30 Wiltshire, a craftsman employed by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) was leaving Dondonald Hill in his car, and was ambushed by gunmen. He tried to escape by running down a bushy hill but he was chased by the gunmen and killed.

Relatives described Wiltshire as a humble person who would rarely go out and would rather stay at home and celebrate birthdays and holidays by inviting friends and family over to cook.

Newsday was told gunmen attacked Wiltshire in 2016, shooting him several times, but he managed to survive the ordeal.

An autopsy done today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The murder toll for the year now stands at 269.
