MAYARO MP Rushton Paray has expressed sadness over the death of Jayden Lalchan, 15, who took his own life on October 3.

He did so before starting his contribution to the 2024/2025 budget debate in the House of Representatives on October 7.

Paray said, "Jaden was a bright and promising student and his untimely death, allegedly stemming from the horrendous act of bullying, reminds us of the urgent need to protect our children and create environments where they feel safe, valued and supported.

"His passing should serve as a wake-up call for all of us, especially in addressing the pressing issues of bullying in our schools.

Paray sent his condolences to Lalchan's family.

"I cannot imagine the depth of your pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of grief."

Paray said no family should ever have to endure such a tragedy.

He added that like Lalchan, he was also a student of St Stephens College. Paray also offered condolences to the school's teachers and students.

In a Facebook post on October 6, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said, "There are reports that Jayden suffered tremendously over an extended period of abuse and bullying. "

She added if these allegations prove to be true, "Justice must be served on all who terrorised this beautiful child and all who turned a blind eye to his suffering."

Persad-Bissessar promised to "ensure that a heavy price will be paid by all those involved in tormenting and terrorising this child into taking his own life."

At a news conference in Chaguanas later in the day, Chaguanas East MP Vandana Mohit supported Persad-Bissessar's views.
