THE  shooting death of 28-year-old Buchanan "Booky" Alibocas while he was asleep in his bedroom in Manahambre, Princes Town, has saddened and angered many residents, who believe that he was not the intended target.

Alibocas, 28, a handyman of Moonan First Avenue, off Malgretoute Road, died on the spot around 3.45 am on July 2.

He lived on the top floor of a wooden house that was unsecured, making it easy for anyone to get in.

Relatives who live on the ground floor and neighbours heard gunshots and alerted the Princes Town police station.

Officers found the body with gunshot wounds to the head on a mattress.

The police said a car pulled up in front of Alibocas’ house and men got out and walked inside. After shooting him they returned to the car, which sped off.

The killers came in slippers, which they took off at the bottom of the stairs. In their haste to flee, they forgot them there.

When Newsday visited the scene, his uncle Andy Alibocas said his nephew was not involved in any criminal activities and, as far as he was aware, his life had not been threatened.

Without giving details, he added: “They came for somebody, but I do not think he was the target. My nephew was not that kind of person. It had to be someone else they came for. He was asleep.”

He recalled that Alibocas had previously worked as a security guard.

Residents told Newsday that Alibocas was a friendly person who hustled and never bothered people. They believe the killer came for a man who often stays there.

“Booky was a good friend. Just yesterday he cut the neighbour’s yard. He was no troublemaker. The only time he became miserable was when he drink. He did not deserve to die that way.”

Another said, “Those bullets were not meant for him, but it happened.”

Police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region III, were also alerted.

No one was arrested and investigations are ongoing.
