A Morvant woman is assisting police with enquiries into the source of a fire at a building in downtown Port of Spain on Tuesday afternoon.

A police media release on Wednesday said the 42-year-old woman, who is a tenant of the building, was arrested by members of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) who were on patrol near Independence Square when they saw the fire.

The release said a group of people approached the officers and told them they saw the woman going into a nearby building and starting the fire.

Police were also told the woman was a tenant who had got into an argument with other tenants over her business, which had been vandalised earlier that day.

The release also said the woman reportedly threatened to "flatten and burn down" the building.
