Five held, millions in marijuana seized in Tobago

Jovel Espinoza was one of five men arrested and charged for the possession of marijuana in a boat off the coast of Tobago earlier this week.

A joint police and Coast Guard exercise off the coast of Tobago led to the arrest of five men and the seizure of $5.8 million in marijuana.

A police media release on Thursday reported that members of the Special Investigations Unit, the Scarborough Divisional Task Force and the Coast Guard received information that a suspicious vessel was adrift off the southwestern coast of Tobago.

As they tried to intercept the boat, officers saw the men throwing crocus bags into the water. The bags were seized and found to contain marijuana.

The five men – Seon Tourean Charles, Desmond "Son" Pavy, Jovel Espinoza, Theodore Bailey and Husayn Sudan Al-Fayed – were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

They appeared before a Scarborough magistrate on Tuesday.

Espinoza and Pavy were remained in custody.Bailey, Charles and Al-Fayed were granted bail of $500,000 each and ordered to report to the St Joseph police station every Wednesday.

They are expected to return to court on January 5.
