Man sentenced to hang for 2008 murder

A SAN Juan man has been sentenced to hang for the 2008 murder of URP labourer Sean Joel Pollard.

The death sentence was read to Anthony Maharaj, who was convicted by a Port of Spain jury for the March 18, 2008, murder.

Pollard, 33, also called Kuta, of Jojo Lane, El Socorro, died on arrival at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope.

Maharaj, who was on trial before Justice Hayden St Clair-Douglas, stabbed Pollard after an argument earlier that day.

Maharaj, at his trial, claimed Pollard lunged towards the knife that was taken from him, but this was disproved by the testimony of pathologist Hughvon des Vignes. who said that was impossible.

Pollard was stabbed once in the left side of his abdomen.

According to the prosecution’s case, an argument started between Pollard’s common-law wife Natalie Nurse and Maharaj, her cousin, and when it got heated Pollard intervened.

At the trial, Nurse was treated as a hostile witness, and testified that Maharaj was not her relative.
