Hike and Plant to protect the Northern Range

Hike and Plant is a series of four events that aspires to integrate environmental responsibility, personal health and recreation.

A media release said this unique experience seeks to get all citizens involved in the protection and rehabilitation of the environment. Its encourages an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to assist in reducing the devastating effects of climate change, global warming and biodiversity loss.

Through hiking and exploring new environments, participants will be exposed to much-needed reforestation activities in key areas of the Northern Range (Trinidad’s largest and most important watershed).

The goal is to plant as many seedlings and trees as possible in areas that are most in need but usually not frequented by citizens, the release said.

There will be three planting zones at each location, with varying degrees of intensity (easy, moderate, and challenging), to guarantee the participation of everyone interested.

All participants will be allowed to collect as many seedlings as possible at the assigned check-in points, then take the marked hiking route to the various planting zones.

This event is free to the public and individuals, groups, organisations and companies are welcome to take part.

Participants are advised to come prepared with: reusable bags or any item to carry plants (no plastic bags), water, gloves (if needed) and comfortable clothing and footwear.

Aims and objectives

To plant approximately 100,000 seedlings in key areas along the Northern Range

To sensitise citizens to the importance of environmental protection and sustainability by achieving approximately 800 participants over the four-part series.

Increase capacity-building opportunities and enhance collaboration between all environmental stakeholders.
