8 arrested during SoE police operations

An Oropune businessman was among eight people arrested during state of emergency police operations on January 9.

Police received information and went to a mini-mart in Oropune Gardens, Piarco.

They searched the store in the presence of the business owner and found 1.38 kg of marijuana hidden in various containers.

The officers arrested the 64-year-old man store owner in connection with the drugs.

Meanwhile, police in the Central Division went to another mini mart in Claxton Bay owned by a priority offender.

They searched the store but found nothing illegal.

Officers expanded their search to an adjoining house where they found and seized 320 grams of marijuana and arrested a man.

Another priority offender was also targeted by police in Claxton Bay when they intercepted him on the Southern Main Road in a heavily-tinted brown Hyundai Elantra.

Police searched the car and found six rounds of ammunition.

They then searched his home under the Emergency Powers Regulation and found nothing else illegal but detained another priority offender under the SoE regulations.

During the operation another known priority offender from Crown Street, Enterprise, was also detained after police searched his home.

Three people were also arrested on outstanding warrants for various offences.

Police in the area also seized 178 grams of marijuana found hidden under a sheet of galvanize on Freedom Street, Enterprise.
