A 31-year-old man has been detained in connection with the beating death of a 56-year-old female relative at the family’s home in Princes Town on August 12.

The body of the mother of two, Marlah Boodram, of Naparima/ Mayaro Road in Cleghorn Village, was found in an empty room next to her bedroom on the first floor of the two-storey house.

She and the suspect, who police were told was an unemployed outpatient of the psychiatric ward of the San Fernando General Hospital, had been arguing for hours.

The police said at around midday on August 12, a villager flagged down police on patrol and told them Boodram was dead.

The officers went to the house and spoke with the suspect and another close relative.

Boodram was found lying on her back with several marks of violence on her body.

The police later arrested the suspect.

Insp Mohammed, Sgt Boodoo, PCs Ali and Deonarine and other police from the Princes Town police station visited the scene. Supt Persad and other police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region III, also visited.

Investigations are ongoing.
