THE EDITOR: The Government must act now to make TT a bilingual state, much like Miami, by incorporating both English and Spanish into daily life. This initiative should start with signage and media, where a full-page ad in newspapers is dedicated to Spanish and English content.

With the deepening economic ties between TT and Venezuela through gas projects, an influx of Venezuelans is inevitable. Consequently, the country must prepare to accommodate this cultural and linguistic shift.

Implementing Spanish education from Forms 1 to 6 in secondary schools, alongside its current inclusion in primary schools, is crucial.

This educational reform ensures that future generations are proficient in both languages, enabling seamless communication and integration. Within five-ten years, Spanish could become a common language on the streets of TT, fostering greater unity and co-operation with the growing Venezuelan community.

By planning and acting now, TT can position itself as a progressive, inclusive society that leverages its multicultural heritage for economic and social growth.

Bilingualism will not only enhance local interactions but also boost international business prospects, making TT a more attractive destination for global partnerships.
