BioBlitz: Over 700 rare species found

Over 170 participants including experts and volunteers, worked to document and celebrate the rich biodiversity of Guayaguayare as part of the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists’ Club’s (TTFNC) annual BioBlitz event on June 29 and 30.

A media release said this year marks the ninth year that First Citizens has supported this exciting environmental initiative.

Founded in 1891, the TTFNC is one of TT's oldest-running clubs. Its mission is to bring together individuals interested in natural history, promote the dissemination of knowledge, and advocate for the conservation of nature and natural resources.

BioBlitz is a unique and intense 24-hour survey aimed at cataloguing the diverse species found in a specific area. The data collected not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness of the importance of conservation and the protection of our natural heritage. The event provides an immersive and educational experience for participants while contributing valuable data to the scientific community.

The partnership between First Citizens and TTFNC began in 2012 and continued annually until 2018 before resuming in 2023. With a renewed commitment, First Citizens has sponsored the event once again this year, underscoring its dedication to environmental conservation and community engagement, the release said.

Key highlights from this year’s BioBlitz include the discovery of 768 rare and endangered species native to Guayaguayare, engaging educational activities for young naturalists, and a heightened appreciation for the natural beauty and diversity of Guayaguayare.
