THE disappearance of 35-year-old Prisons Officer Alexander Johnson has left his family baffled. On January 18, his worried wife wept and prayed for his safe return home.

The father of four was last seen at the family’s home in Barrackpore at around 9.30 am on January 17 wearing a brown T-shirt and black short pants. His car, wallet, cell phone and wedding ring were found in the house.

Tears streaming down her face, Johnson’s wife Affian Charles-Johnson, held their youngest child, two-year-old Atilyah Johnson, on her lap and prayed. She also recited Psalm 23.

“He did not say anything about going anywhere, so I do not know where he is. He probably left his phone at home for me to get access to the children’s homework because I do not have a phone,” Charles-Johnson said. She said even if he went somewhere without saying where he was going, it was strange that he had yet to return home.

Looking at his car parked in the garage at the front of the house, she said the car had mechanical problems.

Charles-Johnson said her husband’s disappearance had taken a toll on her health. She added that by 2.30 pm, she had not eaten anything for the day. She said she was feeling weak.

Johnson is assigned to the Eastern Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre in Santa Rosa and was expected to report for duty on Wednesday night. He has almost four years of service. She first reported him missing to the Princes Town police who transferred the case to Barrackpore police.

Johnson was rostered to work on the night of January17. The police called his supervisor, who told them Johnson had not reported to duty. Another female relative told Newsday that his uncle, who lives nearby, saw Johnson at the roadside near the family’s home at around 8 am on January 17.

Another person said Johnson was in his grandmother’s yard a stone’s throw away around the same time.

“It is strange. This is not something he was accustomed to doing. He does not lime or drink and keeps to himself. He is a quiet person. To my knowledge, he has no enemies. Everyone around here is family. We do not know if he walked out of the road or jumped in a car. We do not know where he is.”

Prisons Commissioner Deopersad Ramoutar told Newsday that the service has been communicating with the family, and up to 4.30 pm on Thursday, there was still no word of his whereabouts. Sgt Mungroo is leading investigations.

Anyone with information on Johnson’s whereabouts can call the Barrackpore police station at 654-0609 or the nearest police station. People can also call the police at 555, 999 or Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS (8477).
