NIHERST, engineers agree to tackle social issues

The National Institute of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology (Niherst) and the Association of Professional Engineers of Trinidad and Tobago (Apett) on Wednesday signed a memorandum of co-operation (MoC) to address engineering-specific issues.

In a media release the joint entities said the aim is to tackle societal pain points currently being faced by communities while advancing the national agenda for enabling science, technology and innovation.

The signing tookplace at Niherst’s head office at Education Towers, Port of Spain. Niherst’s president Marleen Lord- Lewis represented it while Apett was represented by its president Dr. Chris Maharaj.

Lord-Lewis said the collaboration will allow citizens to experience STEM as a tangible benefit through engineering technology solutions that address day-to-day issues within the community. Maharaj said the partnership will improve the quality of life for the population.

The first solution will be the launch of a public education series in August. The series will discuss engineering challenges such as road maintenance, flooding and renewable energy. It will be open to the public.
