Shomari Hector has been elected Deputy Presiding Officer of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

Hector, who is the Assistant Secretary in the Division of Tourism, Culture and Transportation, was elected on Thursday at the start of the 36th plenary sitting at the Assembly Legislature, Scarborough.

His election elicited thunderous applause from members.

THA Presiding Officer Vanessa Cutting-Thomas announced there was a vacancy for the position in the Assembly after Ancil Dennis’ elevation to the post of Chief Secretary on May 6.

Dennis, who is also Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Transportation, nominated Hector for the position of deputy presiding officer and it was seconded. There were no other nominees.

She did not indicate when this would take place.

Before being re-assigned to the Division of Tourism, Culture and Transportation, recently, Hector served as assistant secretary in the Division of Community Development, Enterprise Development and Labour, under Marslyn Melville-Jack.
