Penny elected chair of UN Women

PERMANENT representative to the United Nations for TT in New York Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has been elected chair of UN Women. An attorney, former senator and minister, Beckles-Robinson served as the first female deputy Speaker and as lady vice-chair of the People’s National Movement.

Beckles-Robinson’s latest appointment was announced on Tuesday by ambassador and TT’s permanent representative to the UN and specialised agencies in Europe, Makeda Antoine-Cambridge

According to its website, UN Women is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. The organisation feels inequality was pervasive, with women lacking access to decent employment and facing gender wage gaps. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.
