UPDATED: Sat played leading role in TT
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has extended condolences to the Hindu community on the passing of Sat Maharaj on behalf of the government.
In a press release on Saturday, Rowley acknowledged that Maharaj, secretary general of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS), played a “leading role” in education, religion, and culture on a national level.
“Under his astute guidance the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha expanded its school network. Mr Maharaj was a tireless advocate who dedicated his life to fighting for what he believed to be worthy causes. We join his family and members of the Hindu community in acknowledging his many contributions as we mourn his passing.”
The Ministry of Education also expressed its condolences to the Maharaj family saying that the country lost a stalwart of the education sector and a champion of the rights of the Hindu community.
Education Minister Anthony Garcia praised the strides made by the SDMS under Maharaj’s leadership. He said, “I always admired the passion with which he conducted himself. I do hope that the excellent legacy left by Mr Maharaj will be maintained in the years to come.”
Movement for Social Justice political leader David Abdulah too sent his condolences to the relatives and members of the SDMS who he “served well for a long time.” He said Maharaj made important contributions to the Hindu community and by extension the national community.
“We can recognise and appreciate that contribution especially in areas like education. Yes he was controversial but, one could agree or disagree, I don’t think that he meant anything ill by his statements.”
Meanwhile, member of the Maha Sabha and former government minister Devant Maharaj called for a state funeral for Maharaj although he admitted that the family may not accept. “Given the immense contribution Sat Maharaj has made to the development of TT in culture, education, religion, media, and overall national development his passing is deserving of national recognition.”
