Kite-maker soars above competition

Whim Police Youth Club coloured the afternoon Mt Grace sky with an array of designs, when they hosted their 4th annual Easter Kite Flying competition at the community recreational ground on Good Friday.

Purnell Smith of Mason Hall was the star of the afternoon as his kite danced and circled its way in the strong wind to secure three titles. Smith's kite, which he nicknamed Mad Stabber, won the artistic, most unusual and best flying categories on the day.

Smith, who has been making and selling kites for over ten years, said it was his first competition but he used his experience to make a superior product. Smith said he was approached on the day to sell the winning kite but he will be keeping it for future events.

The highly anticipated Mad Bull division was won by Anthon Spencer of Calder Hall.

Other winners were: Amya Brathwaite in the youngest flyer category; the oldest flyer was Lance Morris of Whim; and the largest kite title went to Elroy Edwards of Les Coteaux

Sgt Mary Patrick, leader of the Whim Police Youth Club, said the competition is one of their marque events on their calendar and she was pleased with the increase in community and individual participation this year.

Patrick also said the club included some fun events during the morning period aimed at adding variety to the programme and increasing the entertainment value for spectators

Among the sponsors were Whim Credit Union, Mt Grace Feed Depot, Grahams Truck and Backhoe Services and Poles Bargain Centre.
