Music business icon laid to rest

CLEVE Calderon, owner of Cleve’s One Stop Music Shop, was described as a legend in the local music business. He died last week Friday after a brief illness. He was 72.

During his funeral yesterday at the Santa Rosa RC Church in Arima, granddaughter Cylene delivered the eulogy saying he was a pioneer in the business where he brought music labels to over 200 local deejays. She said his passion was music and he never gave up on his calling.

Cylene said in his quiet, unassuming way her grandfather became an instrument in promoting local music, even when records went out and CDs took over. Cylene said his passion for music was only surpassed by his love and commitment to family.

She said in the end, it was his humbleness that tricked him because he never thought about his failing health, his only concern was for his family. Delivering the homily, Fr Urban Hudlin said the funeral was akin to a national day of mourning given that within recent times, a number of this country’s cultural heroes have died including four prominent calypsonians. Following the service, Calderon was laid to rest at the nearby cemetery.
