Escaped prisoner captured in Scarborough area

Shauneil Charles, 22, of Golden Lane, on Monday escaped police custody after appearing in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court but was captured about an hour later in the Scarborough area.

Charles, the grandson of former Chief Secretary Hochoy Charles, appeared before a magistrate on charges of possession of ammunition, several counts of dangerous driving and possession of marijuana. His matter was adjourned to a future date and he was remanded into custody.

While in the holding cell at the courthouse around 11 am, Charles asked police officers to use the washroom. Newsday Tobago was told by a security guard on the scene that when Charles was removed from the holding cell, he saw an unsecured exit and bolted pass an officer, escaping through it.

Newsday Tobago was told officers are required to ensure that all exit points are secured before a prisoner was removed from the holding cell.
