East Indians tricked into coming to TT
THE EDITOR: Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.
East Indians did not come to TT willingly. They were lied to, tricked, told half-truths by “Arkatias,” the Indian recruiters. Just like what goes on today.
When they realised the job scope had changed, they were threatened with horrible fates. They were given offers they could not refuse. This was and never could be voluntary emigration.
No Brahmins came to TT. Many became Brahmins by boat. Imagine someone leaving gated Westmoorings and going to Grenada to sell cloth on their backs. Highly improbable.
Indo-Trinis have distinguished themselves in the fields of medicine, engineering and law. The names Maharaj and Ratiram readily come to mind.
One field where success seems to have eluded them is politics. Why is that I wonder? Is it a behavioural trait?
Basdeo Panday was TT’s first Indo-Trini prime minister. His tenure was short-lived. One term really. Kamla Persad-Bissessar followed her maha guru. Again one term.
Is it that they are more comfortable in opposition than in government? More suited as a critical adult rather than a nurturing parent?
Fast forward to today. I draw your attention to the communication between a religious leader and an opposition leader. One is saying the right thing while the other is saying the politically correct thing. I would not lose any sleep over the incident.
Politicians are strange bedfellows. One said he would sleep with the devil to remove the PNM. Last check the devil was still male.
Arkatias still exist today in both the PNM and UNC. They lie, cheat and deceive their own.
We are grateful for the Indo contribution to TT. From food, culture and the economy.
An Indo-Trini of note is Dr Rudranath Capildeo. However, there is an opportunity for improvement. Aspire to remain in government for two full consecutive terms.
Happy Indian Arrival Day, TT.
