The Councilc and Administration of the City of San Fernando recently celebrated the outstanding achievements of individuals who brought pride and joy to the city.

Rayden Rampersad, 10 years old, was among those honoured and was given the City of San Fernando Civic Award for Excellence in Sports. According to Mayor Junior Regrello, sport represents a pivotal yet underutilised discipline and remains an important foundation that an equitable and diverse society is built.

Rampersad, a student of San Fernando TML Primary, is a double national record holder in chess. Rampersad is the youngest person in Trinidad and Tobago to get a world FIDE rating at the age of seven. He is also the youngest in TT and the English-speaking Caribbean to get a world chess title and became a candidate master at age eight.

Rampersad’s performances in chess, according to Regrello, act as a powerful catalyst and an inspiration to others who seek to follow his example.

This is the second time this year that Rampersad has been honoured for his achievements in chess. The National Council of India Culture at the Divali Nagar 2017 recognised Rampersad for his outstanding effort as a junior player representing this country locally and internationally.
