[UPDATED] Man killed by police in Barataria

A police-involved shooting in Barataria on September 13 has left one man dead.

Reports say police on an exercise  at around 7 am on September 13 went to Upper Sixth Avenue, where they shot a Jerry Reuben.

The details of what led to the shooting are unclear, but multiple residents told Newsday Reuben was involved with a gang.

Some residents refused to speak to the media and others only spoke on condition of anonymity.

A resident described Reuben as a “menace” and said he was one of several men in the area involved in gang activity. The resident said Reuben was rumoured to have been involved in a shooting near the basketball court in the area several weeks ago.

Another resident said Reuben’s death was not unexpected.

“If it wasn’t the police (who killed him), it would have been somebody else.”

A relative who lives in the area said Reuben was known to the police, but denied he was a gang member.

She described the father of three as kind-hearted.

“He is the kind of person who will help anybody.”

She said residents living higher north of the basketball court on Upper Sixth Street were being unfairly blamed for anything that happens in the area.

“Anything happen out de road, they blaming the residents at Tenth Street.”

She said the family is distraught ,as Reuben was the third person in the family to die by gun violence in recent months.

Despite this, she insisted she is not going to move away.

“I not running from there. My husband’s blood, sweat, and tears in that house. I not leaving!”
