Freeport man, 21, gets bail, charged with robbing couriers
A Master in the High Court has granted $60,000 surety bail to a 21-year-old man charged with six counts of robbery.
Jameel Mills, of Calcutta No 3, Mc Bean Village in Couva, faced master Shabiki Cazabon on August 15, charged with five counts of robbery with aggravation and one count of robbery with violence.
As a condition of bail, Mills must report to the Freeport police station on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. He must also report to the San Fernando Criminal Registry (bail monitoring programme). He was also given a curfew from 10 pm-6 am.
The matter was adjourned to September 17 and transferred to the Couva Magistrates’ Court.
The police contend that the accused ordered several products online and robbed the couriers at gunpoint when they came to drop them off in Freeport.
Several online stores reported to police that between February and August, their couriers were robbed in the Freeport district, resulting in the loss of a wide assortment of packages, cash and other valuables.
In a sting operation on August 12, police from Freeport CID led by Sgt Harriot and Cpl Bajan and the Central Division Gang Unit arrested the accused at Beaucarro Road, Freeport.
