Turning of political tide
THE EDITOR: I have been observing the commentary on Dr Keith Rowley’s manoeuvring of MP Stuart Young into the position of prime minister-in-waiting with some interest.
Much of the discourse centres on whether this move might alienate a segment of the PNM’s traditional black base, given Young’s ethnicity. However, I believe this analysis misses a more significant point: ethnicity is no longer the primary determinant of voting behaviour in TT, as exemplified by the manoeuvres taken by Rowley, one of the country’s shrewdest politicians.
The evolution of politics in our country and globally suggests that voters are increasingly prioritising competence, policies, and tangible results over tribal allegiances.
While commentators speculate about the political wisdom of Rowley’s actions, the real focus should be on the pressing challenges that our nation faces – rising crime levels involving murders, extortion, home invasions, illegal guns, and corruption in the midst of economic decline. These are the issues that voters will demand solutions for in the 2025 general election.
It is clear that TT’s electorate is no longer content with rhetoric or symbolic gestures. The success of political parties and their candidates will hinge on their ability to articulate and implement policies that improve the standard of living for all citizens, regardless of background.
This trend is not unique to our nation, the election of Barack Obama in the US and Rishi Sunak in the UK point to a broader shift in voter priorities toward performance and leadership ability over identity.
As we approach a pivotal election, it is essential for citizens from every community to participate in shaping the future. Competence and accountability must become the benchmarks for leadership, and the political process must reflect the collective ambition of all Trinidadians and Tobagonians to build a better, safer, and more prosperous nation.
Our country’s progress depends on political parties and their candidates being prepared to meet these demands and lead with vision, integrity, and determination.
