Makaira Wallace breaks Trinidad and Tobago sprint cycling record
Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Makaira Wallace broke her national women's sprint record in the qualifying round at the 2024 Junior Track World Championships in China, but could not replicate that form in the later round and was eliminated.
Wallace clocked 10.874 seconds in the qualifying round, which was the second fastest time among the starters. Wallace crushed her previous national record of 11.361. She is now the only TT woman to go under the 11-second barrier.
Wallace then lost in heat two of the 1/8 final to Korean cyclist Yebeen Park. Wallace was much faster than Park in the qualifying round as the latter clocked 11.840.
TT riders Darnell James and Syndell Samaroo competed in the men's keirin. In round one, James did not finish heat one and Samaroo was second in heat six. Only the winner in each heat advanced.
The TT pair had another chance to progress, but did not win their heats in the round one repechage. Samaroo was second again and James did not start.
Jadian Neaves was sixth in the qualifying round of the men's scratch race and booked a place in the final. Neaves did not complete the final later in the day because of a crash.
