Comments on pull-out by Jindal mere speculation
THE EDITOR: It seems that we have entered, or are further into, silly season, if only by one party declaring being in election mode.
Then there is the news of the withdrawal of Indian investor Naveen Jindal's interest in the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery, which was greeted with comments by local economists.
While Jindal stated his decision was motivated due to "character assassination" from opponents of his bid, one economist offers another reason. Dr Bishnu Ragoonath speculates that Jindal may have "more serious reasons for pulling out."
Declaring Jindal took "an easy approach out" by simply blaming the opposition, Ragoonath seems not to take into account that the opposition's claim to be "the government in waiting" will be of serious concern in any investor's involvement.
Dr Marlene Attzs also posited that there "may have been other factors" but was not, wisely, willing to speculate.
The failed Sandals project was seen by Dr Vanus James as the result of government's failure to consult with the wider population and instead operated in a high-handed manner. One cannot see any such consultation being possible while a tender/invitation to express interest is in train.
Noteworthy is that Sandals made a similar claim for their withdrawal following the opinions then expressed.
There are – not maybe – certainly other factors that are of concern to investors, but the comments being offered are mere speculation.
We have seen repeatedly calls for reopening of the refinery, but here we have a display of all the reasons why we should not do so. The initial offer by OWTU was greeted with tremendous joy as we would ideally like to see local ownership.
