The police have confirmed that the man who collided with the PTSC bus in San Fernando on Tuesday is a suspect in a stabbing which left a close female friend hospitalised.

Up to Tuesday afternoon, the suspect, 24, a member of the TT Defence Force from Chaguanas, was under police guard at the San Fernando General Hospital.

The 20-year-old woman, who was left for dead in a car on the highway hours earlier, was also at the hospital with multiple injuries.

The ordeal stemmed from a dispute over cellphone calls before dawn. The two were in a car that he borrowed from a friend.

At around 1 am, the argument escalated and he stabbed her several times. The police said the argument started on the southbound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway and ended on the northbound lane in Preysal.

After the stabbing, he left the wounded woman in the car parked on the shoulder of the road. She was taken to hospital.

At around 9.30 am, the suspect was standing on the pavement under the walkover along Lady Hailes Avenue.

The police said he deliberately stepped off the pavement and was struck by a deluxe coach bus carrying passengers.

He collided with the left side of the bus’s windscreen, which shattered. He fell to the ground with multiple injuries.

The bus driver stopped nearby and the passengers got off. No one else was injured. Video footage circulating shows the injured man on the ground as people gathered around him.

One person says he managed to say he was from the Chaguanas area. The injured man also managed to pass on his father’s number so he could be told of the incident. Southern Division police later learned he was a suspect in the stabbing, which took place in the Central Division. Investigations are ongoing.
