Dominican Republic holds cigar, rum night
The embassy of the Dominican Republic hosted a Cigar and Rum Night on October 22.
The event, at the Club Room, the Renaissance at Shorelands, showcased what are said to be the best cigars in the Caribbean.
Ambassador Wellington Bencosme reminded guests the Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's number-one exporter of premium hand-made cigars and contributes approximately 33 per cent of global exports. The country exports more than 350 million cigars a year.
Bencosme said rum exports from the Dominican Republic accumulated figures of US$84 million from January-July 2023.
“It is a pleasure for us to show the quality of our export products. Cigar and Rum Night is a very important event for Dominican embassies around the world and in Trinidad and Tobago we wanted to do it the same way.”
Dominican master roller Magdanelo Bonilla of the La Aurora brand, the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, who was at the event made cigars by hand.
