TT netballers lose to Barbados but beat St Vincent

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s netball team opened their 2022 Caribbean Games campaign with a loss against Barbados but bounced back to win against St Vincent and the Grenadines when day one action jumped off at the Laura Flessel Complex in Guadeloupe on Thursday.
In their opening contest against the Bajans, TT went down 45-32.
Their second clash, later on, saw TT better St Vincent and the Grenadines 52-15. TT were always in control and ended the opening 15-minute quarter 14-3.
After the second period, TT maintained a 24-8 lead and continued their dominance in the third quarter, leading 34-14.
Regional powerhouse Jamaica won their two opening matches against St Lucia and Guadeloupe and currently lead the round-robin standings.
On Friday, TT face Guadeloupe from 5pm and play their remaining matches against St Lucia (8am TT time) on Saturday and Jamaica (2pm) on Sunday.
The six competing nations play each other once and the team that finishes with the most points will be crowned inaugural Caribbean Games netball champions.
Up to press time last night, TT’s swimmers were in action at the Inter-municipal pool in Abymes. Mark-Anthony Beckles and Nikoli Blackman won their respective heats in the men’s 50-metre freestyle and were scheduled to contest the final after press time on Thursday.
TT’s track and field contingent begin their quest at Gosier Stadium on Friday from 4pm. Contesting the men’s 100m heats are Kion Benjamin and Jaydon Moore while Akilah Lewis, Tamia Badal, Leah Bertrand and Naomi Campbell take on the women’s equivalent.
Also expected to feature in Friday’s 400m heats are Che Lara and Rae-Anne Serville while cyclist Tyriq Woods competes in the men’s time trial (2pm), the women’s 3x3 basketball team squares off against Haiti (12.30pm) and Guadeloupe (2pm) and the futsal contingent begin their campaign against the hosts (8.30pm).
