Lawrence Scott reads from new novel in video series
AWARD-WINNING Trinidadian author Lawrence Scott reads an extract from his new historical novel, Dangerous Freedom, in the newest video in the Papillote Press series En Papillote.
The independent publisher based in Dominica and the UK started the series in January on YouTube and other social media outlets. It features readings by Papillote Press authors, including Diana McCaulay, Lisa Allen-Agostini and Philip Nanton, a media release said.
Dangerous Freedom, Scott’s first novel since Light Falling on Bamboo in 2013, was published in March 2021. It weaves fact with fiction to reveal “the great deception” exercised by the powerful on a mixed-race child, Dido Belle, born in the late 18th century and brought up in the London home of England’s Lord Chief Justice.
Publisher Polly Pattullo says in the release, “In this video, Lawrence Scott reads from the opening pages, introducing Dido, now a married woman, as she remembers the traumas of her past and faces her fears of her present.”
The first four readings in the En Papillote series featured young adult authors: McCaulay –Gone to Drift, Allen-Agostini –Home Home, Viviana Prado-Núñez –The Art of White Roses and Joanne Skerrett –Abraham’s Treasure.
These were followed by a reading from Riff: The Shake Keane Story, Philip Nanton’s biography of the Vincentian jazz musician and poet.
The series is expected to continue with readings from other authors on the Papillote Press list.
