No word on arrival of UK experts for DSS probe

There has been no word on when investigators from the UK are expected to arrive to assist in the ongoing investigations into the "Drugs Sou-Sou" (DSS) scheme, police sources said on Monday.

Police said while they could confirm that enquiries into the legality of the scheme have begun, they could not say how close British investigators are to arriving in TT.

Last week two senior officers from the Royal Barbados Police Force were sworn in as Special Reserve Police (SRP) constables.

Asked whether these officers were out of self-isolation, the source declined to comment.

Last Tuesday, National Security Minister Stuart Young told Newsday that Police Commissioner Gary Griffith, who is in Europe on vacation, may visit Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA)'s head office for further discussions.

Earlier this month the Prime Minister announced that he was disturbed by developments in the investigation into the DSS scheme, saying he would be calling for assistance from Barbados and the NCA for assistance in probing the incident.

In September police led by the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), the Northern Division and the Financial Investigations Bureau raided the home of a DSS administrator and seized $22 million in cash.

The cash was returned to the administrator hours later without the knowledge of senior investigators.
