Woman, 67, and son on gang-related charges

A 67-YEAR-OLD woman, her son, 32, and two other men appeared before an Arima magistrate on Tuesday charged with gang-related offences. Police charged the woman, who lives in Arouca, with aiding and abetting gang activities. Police charged her son with being a gang leader and threatening to take retaliatory action against former gang members. He has similar matters pending for which he was granted bail last November by an Arima magistrate.

The four accused stood before senior magistrate Joanne Connor charged by Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit police under the Anti-Gang Act 2018. They were arrested two weeks ago.

The two other men, ages 22 and 34, were each charged with being a gang member. The elder accused faced an additional charge of having 90 grammes of marijuana.

All charges were laid indictably and the accused were not called upon to plead. Attorneys Sheldon Guerra, Seanna Baboolal and Terry Boyer represented them.

The magistrate granted the woman $75,000 bail, but her son and the 22-year-old man were denied bail. The 34-year-old was granted $85, 000 bail.

Connor adjourned the matters to February 19.
