EL SOCORRO Youth Movement (EYM) upset bigwigs Cane Farm to bowl off Group C action in the UWI-Unicom Twenty20 (T20) Cricket tournament yesterday, at the Sir Frank Worrell Ground, St Augustine. EYM recorded a seven-wicket win over last year’s finalist, sending in Cane Farm to bat first which saw them register 145 for nine in their 20. In response, EYM took it down to the last over as they got to 149 for three with three balls to spare.

EYM were off to a quick start with Alden Daniel (36 with three fours and two sixes) and Shaquille McDavid (37 with four fours and one six) putting on 69 in eight overs. When Navin Bidassie removed Daniel and Anthony Simmons bowled McDavid, EYM were left on 82 in just under 10. However, the second half of the innings saw them slowly crawl home as Aaron Alfred led the way with an unbeaten 41. Brandon Ramdial chipped in with an invaluable 27 from 26, which included a lone four and two maximums before being run out after the duo put on 56 for the third wicket. Ultimately, Alfred saw his team home, taking 32 balls to make his knock with five fours and a six, and smashing a four through the covers to end the game in 19.3 overs.

When Cane Farm batted, they struggled to get the engine going despite having national players such as Rayad Emrit and Lendl Simmons in tow. Last year, they had a few more big names such as Sunil Narine and Denesh Ramdin, but with such players out playing franchise cricket or regional matches, Cane Farm couldn’t replicate their dominance.

Emrit led the way with 39 from 20, which included five fours and two sixes. Simmons made 32 from 20 with a pair of boundaries and three sixes, while Romel Nanan tried to move the score along with 28 from 34 (three fours, one six). However, Cane Farm had no response to man-of-the-match Shakeem Prince who ripped through the order with four for 19 from his quota of four, including the prized wicket of Simmons. He’d go on to mop the tail up with Anthony Jawahir and Simmons (A) both falling leg-before. Bryan Boodram aided proceedings with two for 19. Group D action bowls off today from 10 am with matches also at 2 pm and 6 pm from the same venue with current champions Powergen, Club Crusoe from Tobago and UWI in action.

Summarised scores: Cane Farm 145/9 (Rayad Emrit 39, Lendl Simmons 32, Romel Nanan 28, Shakeem Prince 4/19, Bryan Boodram 2/19) vs. EYM 149/ 3 (Aaron Alfred 41 not out, Shaquille McDavid 37, Alden Daniel 36, Brandon Ramdial 27). EYM won by seven wickets.
