Prisons escape by one wicket in UWI
PRISONS made a stunning start to their 2019 UWI-UNICOM T20 Tournament campaign yesterday, with a nail-biting one-wicket win over Central Sports at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Ground, St Augustine. Opening Group B action, Central Sports were sent in to bat and were bowled out for 154 with Prisons scraping home in the final over of the match.
Central Sports started with a bang as Kamil Pooran opened with a blistering 24 off 12 (four fours, one six). But J Seales ended the excitement by removing him and fellow opener C Vincent (13). National player Kjorn Ottley also fell cheaply for two with Jesse Bootan (14), Alex Antoine (14) and Shazan Babwah (nine) having brief stays at the crease. R Ramlogan got the latter duo out cheaply and then shattered Kris Ramsaran's stumps for a duck to keep the wickets flowing. It was eventually left to Vushan Jagessar (51) to muster a respectable total. He took just 24 deliveries with three fours and a six to his credit before Seales ran him out. Ramlogan ended with three for 21 and Seales two for 37.
Prisons made tough work of the chase with bowlers like Babwah (one for 23), Al Small (two for 24) and Ricky Jaipaul (one for 22) proving miserly in the onset. Ravi Khan proved to be the team's hero despite wickets falling at regular intervals around him. He made 78 from 52 with seven fours and four mammoth sixes to keep Central Sports' bowlers at bay. Kissoondath Magram proved to be the pick of the bowlers, quickly grabbing three scalps for 18 from his four overs.
With the score on 96 for eight, Seales (20 not out) joined Khan and they took the score to 138 before Khan fell to Small. Seales kept his nerve, despite the pressure of overs and wickets running out, and unleashed two fours and a six to take his team home with two balls to spare. Khan would claim the man-of-the-match honours for his heroics.
Summarised scores: Central Sports 154 all out (V Jagessar 51, Kamil Pooran 24, R Ramlogan 3/21, J Seales 2/37) vs Prisons 155/9 (Ravi Khan 78, J Seales 20, Kissoondath Magram 3/18, Al Small 2/24). Prisons won by one wicket.
