‘Cocky’ dead after Cocorite shooting

SHOT DEAD: Kendel Duncan
SHOT DEAD: Kendel Duncan

KENDEL “Cocky” Duncan was shot and killed yesterday afternoon in Cocorite, in what police and relatives are calling a case of mistaken identity. Another man, believed to be the intended target of the gunmen was also shot, but sources indicate he was wounded by police officers who responded to the shooting.

Newsday understands at about 1 pm Duncan was near building six, at Waterhole, Cocorite. Sources said he had gone to visit two of his four children, who lived in the building. Newsday was told that he stepped out of the building and went to the back when gunmen came to shoot another man, known only as Kadeem. However instead of killing Kadeem, the gunmen shot Duncan multiple times, before escaping in a red Dodge Caravan car, which was reported stolen last week. As the shooting started police were alerted and officers of the Western Division responded. Residents in the area said when first responders arrived on the scene they saw Kadeem running away. They ordered him to stop, and when he refused, they allegedly opened fire on him, hitting him in his arm and leg. Moments later, police found Duncan bleeding from gunshot wounds at the back of the building. Both men were taken to the St James Medical Facility, where Duncan died. Kadeem is said to be in a stable condition.
