Noah Simmons remembered at Sando Future Stars tourney

NOAH Simmons, the promising Shiva Boys Hindu School student and footballer who was shot and killed on his 16th birthday in May was remembered at the 20th San Fernando Future Stars Tournament recently hosted by the San Fernando Sporting Academy.

San Fernando Sporting Academy director Preston Nanan created the Noah Simmons MVP award for the best player of the tournament in a fitting tribute to Simmons who was a long time stand-out player at the annual event. Simmons took part in his first tournament in 2008. He represented Marabella Family Crisis Centre.

Malachi Webb, who captained the hosts, San Fernando SA, to glory in the Under-12 division, received the Noah Simmons MVP award.

The annual football tournament, which feature divisions from U-4 to U-16, was held at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on June 23.

The U-16 division was won by St John’s Ballaz. Cox Coaching School placed first in the U-10 and U-14 divisions, second in the U-12 division and third in the U-6 division. The hosts won the U-12 and U-6 divisions, placed second in the U-14 and U-16 divisions and third in the U-10 division.

Following the event, medals and trophies were presented to the teams that finished first to third.

The San Fernando Sporting Academy is a registered non-profit organisation that trains young footballers, hosts football camps and tournaments annually for both boys and girls.

The academy was nominated for the Ministry of Sport’s Spirit of Sports Awards from 2011-2013 in the categories of Community Champion, Community Group and Community Sports Programme of the Year.

In 2012, the academy won the Community Sports Programme Award, then the Community Group Award in 2013.

A year later, the academy received the COSTAATT business idea award.

The academy has won over 15 tournaments in seven years.

Most notably, the U-13 team won five tournament and placed second in three others.

In 2015, the academy sent U-10 and Under-13 teams to the Disney Soccer Tournament, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, in Orlando, Florida.
