Religious boards: Concern about sex-ed in schools

A row could be brewing over the teaching of sex/sexuality education in schools, according to a statement issued by Maha Sabha head Sat Maharaj on behalf of several religious school boards after a meeting on June 13.

“The Association of Denominational Boards of Education notes with grave concern, plans to introduce comprehensive sexuality education as part of the Health and Family Life Education curriculum.

“The association calls for comprehensive dialogue on this matter as it has serious reservations.”

Otherwise the board urged the Government to properly fund their activities, just as the boards and their schools spend millions of dollars each year on their own contributions.

“We expect the Ministry of Education to meet its financial obligations and to have dialogue with the boards on all major decisions that impact on our education system.”

The statement lamented that for the past three years the construction of new denominational and government schools has been halted.
