Send them back to school

THE EDITOR: One sympathises with the students and parents affected by the current shift system between the Princes Town Presbyterian Nos 1 and 2 Schools.

Extra-curricular activities are now at a minimum and there have been inconveniences associated with various pick-up and drop-off times. However, the decision by parents to keep their away from classes at the Princes Town Presbyterian No 1 School since the term started defies all logic.

One major reason for this protest action was that the students were not getting enough time to complete their syllabus due to the shortened school days because of the shift system. Yet despite this there have only been two days of teaching for this term so far as parents have kept their children away.

Some affluent parents have hired extra help for their children but the majority of parents cannot afford this luxury and their children are therefore suffering academically.

There are no good reason to keep the students from classes. There are no health hazards like sewer problems, rat or tick infestations, no unstable walls as have been highlighted in other school protests.

The PTA has included students in its protest to gain attention to its plight – the very same children who are losing out on their education.

I urge the PTA, the principal, parents and teachers to ensure that all the students are encouraged to attend school as I encouraged my child to do the same. Silence is not golden.
