IN SHOCK: Paula Chunisingh, mother of murder victims Damian and Polly-Ann Chunisingh whose bodies were found along with their uncle’s, Randy Chunisingh, at their Pinto Road, Arima home on Monday. - ROGER JACOB

While most of Arima slept on Saturday night, a scream from the home of 39-year-old Damian Chunisingh awoke one neighbour from his sleep. But thinking nothing of it, he went back to bed. Little did he know that scream may have been Chunisingh's last cry for help.

This was the scene that awaited relatives at the Chunisingh's Getwell Avenue, Pinto Road, house on Monday morning when concerned relatives broke down the door to find the bodies of Chunisingh, his sister Polly-Ann Chunisingh, 31, and uncle Randy Chunisingh, 55, tied and their throats slit.

Newsday visited the scene and spoke to relatives who said they last saw the trio on Saturday afternoon and made attempts to contact them throughout Sunday morning.

Worried family members even resorted to throwing stones at their window to get their attention but to no avail.

One relative said he saw Damian's car in the driveway of the house and suspected the worst, knowing he would not leave home without it.

Eventually on Monday, just after 9 am, a group of relatives jumped the wall of the property and knocked down the front door to find the bodies of their loved ones tied and bleeding from the throat.

Investigators said the hands of the victims were tied using plastic tie straps and they were gagged to muffle their screams.

The back of the house is blocked off with a barbed wire fence, but investigators and relatives said a blanket was thrown over the barbed wire, presumably allowing someone to climb over the fence and into the yard.

Polly-Ann Chunisingh, one of the three people killed. -

Newsday spoke to Danier Chunisingh, sister of Polly-Ann and Damian Chunisingh, who called for justice for the murder of her siblings and uncle.

She said while she did not know why anyone would want to kill them, she called for swift action from the police to find their killers.

"They were limers. That's all they were – very quiet people who barely came out. I really don't know what to say right now. This is a really hard time for all of us and we are doing our best to cope.

"It's almost as if whoever did this doesn't have a conscience or they don't have any feelings. When they were done they locked back all the doors as if they weren't even there."

She said her uncle was visiting Trinidad on vacation from Canada where he lived and worked. He was supposed to return home this week.

Chunisingh said the deaths of her relatives instantly soured the new year for her as she had to be consoled by relatives at the scene.

Residents said they were surprised when they heard of the murders as Getwell Avenue had a reputation of being one of the more quiet and peaceful streets in Arima.

Asked if they saw or heard anything unusual, one relative said they may have heard a scream on Saturday night but dismissed it and went back to bed.

Up until late on Monday afternoon, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators probed the forested areas around the house in search of clues that may lead them to the killers.

An autopsy is expected to be done at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, on Tuesday.

The deaths of the Chunisingh family along with the murder of pre-school teacher Jezelle Phillip on George Street, Port of Spain, brought the murder toll to six for the year thus far.

A vacation in Trinidad ended in death for Randy Chunisingh, who along with his niece Polly Ann Chunisingh and nephew Damian Chunisingh, was found dead in a house in Arima on Monday.

Newsday visited the house at Getwell Avenue, Pinto Road, where the bodies of the three were found.

Shocked relatives said they did not understand why anyone would want to murder the three.

"They were limers. That's all they were very quiet people who barely came out," a relative said.

They said Randy Chunisingh lived in Canada and was visiting his niece and nephew when he was killed.

"The last time anyone saw them was on Saturday evening.

"All of Sunday they tried getting into contact with them, even throwing stones against the house to get them to answer. But we heard nothing."

Relatives said they feared the worst when they saw Damian's car still in the yard, as they knew he would not leave home without it.

"We jumped the wall this morning and went in the house. That's when they (other relatives) found their bodies."

Police said the Chunisinghs were found bound and gagged, with their throats slit.

Neighbours said Getwell Avenue was known as one of the quieter, peaceful streets in Arima, but they are now very shaken after this triple murder.
