West, Carrington break TT swim records
Kyle West and Liam Carrington broke national records over the weekend as the Republic Bank Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) Invitational Tournament continued at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva.
In yesterday’s final day, Carrington broke a seven-year boys eight and under 200-metre individual medley record held by Luke Gillette. Carrington of Atlantis Aquatics won gold in two minutes, 54.86 seconds (2:54.86) to better Gillette’s mark of 2:57.27. Earning silver in the event was Antoine Destang representing Sharks Swim Club of St Lucia in 2:59.47, while Anpherne Bernard of Tidal Wave took bronze in 3:19.26.
In a quality boys 15 and Over 200m individual medley field, Gillette of Marlins edged the rest of the participants to win gold in 2:19.62.
The top three were separated by less than a second as Jeron Thompson of Atlantis grabbed silver in 2:19.81 and Kael Yorke of Tidal Wave earned bronze in 2:20.42.
On Saturday night, West broke the boys 11-12 50m breaststroke record when he copped gold in 32.84. Thompson previously held the record of 33.19 since 2013. Riquelio Joseph of Sea Hawks took silver in 33.50 and Ziv Reynolds of Sharks snatched bronze in 35.12.
There were dominant performances from Jahmia Harley and Anneliese Merry in the backstroke. In the girls 13-14 200m backstroke Harley of Tidal Wave eased to gold in 2:30.95. Finishing in second place was Karci Gibson of ‘Y’ Speedos in 2:39.61, and Marisa Louisy of Sea Jays took bronze in 2:47.28.
In the girls 15 and over 200m backstroke, Merry of Marlins copped gold in 2:33.65, ahead of Tidal Wave’s Sabrina David in 2:43.93 and Rebecca Lashley of Pirates in Barbados in 2:50.02.
