TTEITI $32.5m in oil spilled between 2016, 2024

THE TT Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TTEITI) says a total of 1,592 oil spills have been recorded in TT from 2016 to October 2024. The oil spilled is valued at $32.5 million, accounting for 91,758.84 barrels with a combined capacity of 3.8 million gallons.

Speaking at the TT Energy Conference 2025 on February 10, Sherwin Long presented the TTEITI's state of the extractive sectors report 2025, noting that Around 3.5 million gallons of the spilled oil were recovered, reducing the financial loss to $3.5 million. Long was the report's national co-ordinator.

The report said over 73 per cent of the spills occurred onshore with Fyzabad, Palo Seco and Point Fortin being among areas most affected.

The most spills were recorded in 2023.

That year saw a total of 302 spills with 189 of those occurring on land while the remaining 113 were marine.

The report said the Energy Ministry planned to improve its spill-monitoring capabilities by purchasing radar systems for early detection. It also noted the ongoing efforts of the EMA in calculating fines for spill events.
