Studio Joli will showcase the works of international artist Nadine Prada titled Shaped by these Shores.

Prada believes her connection and appreciation for the sensual nature of Caribbean society, and her removal from it during her formative years shaped who she is and how she sees the world, a media release said.

White house in the hills -

She recalled painting palm trees while her peers were painting pines and maples, as an artist working in Canada.

"My colours were warm and vivid. I was drawn to lush and evocative landscapes where I called on the five senses to help me express those exotic places that moved me in layers of paint that sometimes created an air of mystery, or of an effervescent excitement, an aliveness that people could sense," she said in the release.

Nestled in the Palms -

"In my late 20s, I became a world traveller. Stepping off of planes in foreign lands would give me a strange sense of coming home if the air was warm and humid, like a kiss on your skin. If you could hear the ocean and if the pace of life was relaxed, I felt like I belonged.

"Now coming into full bloom in this latest series, I have mined the rich territory of my childhood and sifted through so many moments, churning up the past and things long forgotten.

Fear not -

"Those that held emotional resonance rose to the surface and are the basis for this work."

She explained those included memories of boat trips down the islands, tasting salt spray on her lips, being chased by her cousin with the fish she had caught, days at Maracas Beach, and visiting Tobago with family after being away for 20 years.

Maracas -

"Of all the many places I’ve been that gave me that sense of warmth, of home, of belonging.”

The exhibition opens September 14, from 5-8 pm and runs until September 26, from10 am-6 pm Monday to Friday, and 10 am-2 pm on Saturdays at 21 Henry Pierre Street, St James.
