Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana play to draw in Under-17 cricket tournament
Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana played to a drawn result in round one of the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-17 Two-Day Championship, which concluded at Inshan Ali Park in Preysal on August 15.
After TT batted first and posted 202 in their first innings, Guyana resumed day two on 94/4 and were all out for 183, trailing by 19 runs.
TT returned to the middle and put on 151/9 in their second innings before declaring, giving Guyana a target of 171 for victory.
However, overs ran out on the final day as Guyana closed on 31/2 in 11 overs, which forced a draw.
Top scoring for TT in their second innings were Jayden Kent (41), Joseph Mendoza (30) and Samir Saroop (19) while Guyanese bowler Romario Ramdeholl (6/62) picked up another six-wicket haul.
In other matches, Barbados defeated Jamaica by an innings and 48 runs at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.
After Barbados dismissed Jamaica for 103 in the first innings, the Bajans responded with a stern 236/7 declared, a lead of 133 runs. Top scoring for Barbados were Joshua Branch (84) and captain Joshua Dorne (51).
Sent back in to bat, Jamaica were swiftly removed for 85 from 32.4 overs, which handed Barbados a convincing opening round win.
Doing damage with the ball for Barbados were Jakeem Pollard (3/6), Zachary Carter (2/9), R’Jai Gittens (2/13) and Xaundre Baptiste (2/20).
Additionally, Windward Islands also sealed a round one victory after defeating Leeward Islands by 71 runs in a low scoring affair at Gilbert Park in California.
Batting first, Windwards scored 134 all out, to which Leewards responded with a paltry 64, trailing by 70 runs.
Windwards returned to the pitch and added 101/7 before declaring, to set Leewards a target of 172 for the win.
Windwards, however, meant business and removed Leewards for 100 runs in 50.2 overs as right-arm fast bowler Cody Fontenelle (5/33) led the charge with a five-wicket haul.
Round two bowls off on August 17 as TT host Barbados at Inshan Ali Park, Windwards chase their second win against Jamaica at Gilbert Park while Guyana face Leewards at the National Cricket Centre.
