Arima Borough worker crushed to death
The mayor of Arima says everyone is in "an absolute state of shock" after a steamroller crushed Aldwyn Kirton to death early on August 7 at the Arima Velodrome.
Balliram Maharaj, mayor of Arima, said, he knew Kirton by the name "Best."
"He worked with me before he came to the Borough.
"On behalf of myself, my family, the borough workers and the councillors I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family."
He described the circumstances of Kirton's death as truly unfortunate.
Maharaj said Kirton was an honest and hard-worker who came from a wonderful family.
"We lost a good human.
"Every time I lose someone in Arima, it's one too much – especially in these conditions."
He said Kirton worked for the corporation for roughly 20 years.
Maharaj said he heard from one of Kirton's co-workers he had plans of resigning to get his pension next year.
"Man plans, but God decides."
Newsday asked Maharaj if the borough was prepared to provide financial support Kirton's family.
He said, "I have no doubt in my mind the councillors will agree to do the best we can."
Maharaj said police were continuing their investigations.
