MINISTER in the Ministry of National Security Keith Scotland held his first official meeting with Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher and the police executive at the Ministry of National Security, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain on July 31.

Scotland, MP for Port of Spain South, took the oath for his new portfolio on July 26. The Prime Minister had revealed Scotland’s impending appointment at a post-Cabinet media briefing the day before.
He said Scotland would assist National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds and would work specifically on police-related issues.

A Ministry of National Security statement said the July 31 meeting “was characterised by a spirit of collaboration and a shared commitment to addressing key issues impacting the police service.”

Scotland took the opportunity, it said, “to gain an in-depth understanding of the operational dynamics and pressing needs (of the police).
“The discussions provided him with valuable insights, into the challenges faced by the police service; and the resources required to enhance their effectiveness.”

The statement said Scotland also shared his vision for the broader national security framework, with a particular focus on the pivotal role of the police, in the ongoing fight against crime.
Scotland “emphasised the need for a robust and responsive security apparatus, ensuring that the (police are) equipped, to meet the evolving demands of law enforcement,” the statement said.

He told Harewood-Christopher the issues raised during the meeting would be addressed with urgency.

“He further emphasised that this meeting marked the beginning of his efforts to tackle crime and enhance the safety of citizens across the nation," the release said. “This engagement underscores the Ministry of National Security's dedication to fostering strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies, as part of its broader strategy to enhance the safety and security of the nation.”
