Water, current in Tobago due back by night of July 2

Water and electricity supplies were expected to be fully restored in Tobago by the evening of July 2 after the passage of category four Hurricane Beryl, according to Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales.

Responding to an urgent question in the Senate, Gonzales said 13 of the Water and Sewerage Authority's (WASA's) plants were fully operational and four were expected to resume by 6 pm that day. On electricity, he said the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission had restored supply to all affected areas in Trinidad. In Tobago, he said 98 per cent of supply had been restored and it was expected to be fully restored by 6 pm that day. Hurricane Beryl spared Trinidad and Tobago as it made its way through the southern Caribbean on July 1.

Tobago experienced some fallen trees, flash floods, a few damaged roofs, and minor landslides.

In Trinidad, the hurricane mainly affected the north, where there were fallen trees and street flooding along the East-West Corridor.

Beryl has since continued across the Caribbean, strengthening to a category five by July 2.
