Labidco plants 400 trees for a purpose

The La Brea Industrial Development Company Ltd (Labidco) launched Phase 2 of its Plant for a Purpose initiative, which saw 400 trees planted on five acres of land on the estate on June 8.

Last year Labidco planted 181 trees on an acre of land.

A release from the company said the initiative is intended to help the Government meet its nationally determined contributions to reduce greenhouse gases set out in the Paris Agreement, which includes reducing cumulative carbon emissions by 15 per cent in key sectors by 2030.

The release said Labidco identified lands on the estate which were unsuitable for industrial activity and had been using them for biological carbon sequestration by planting trees. On June 8 Labidco officials planted poui, mahogany, Olivier, angelin and mahoe trees, selected for their ability to absorb carbon and thrive in most types of soil.

Minister of Energy Stuart Young, in an address at the event, said while TT is a hydrocarbon-based economy, the Government places equal importance on the mitigation and development of a low-carbon economy.

Labidco chairman Dr Joseph Khan said the Plant for a Purpose initiative is an example of the company’s commitment to implement strategies to tackle environmental issues.

“Our efforts today are a template for our stakeholders in the community, as well as our partners in energy,” he said. “We are all beneficiaries of the resources derived from the environment and we must take commensurate action as primary custodians to be part of the solution and protect the environment.”
