“It was Gavaskar, the real master, just like a wall we couldn’t out Gavaskar at all, not at all,” is just part of Lord Relator’s well-known song honouring the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar.

The Little Master, as he is fondly called, was given a plaque on Friday during the tea break on day two of the second Test match between West Indies and India at the Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair on Friday.

Gavaskar, 74, has been adored by TT and West Indies fans since the early 1970s when India toured the Caribbean.

Gavaskar impressed cricket fans in the region which encouraged Lord Relator to write a song about the India team with special attention given to the Little Master.

President of the Queen’s Park Cricket Club Dr Nigel Camacho presented Gavaskar with the plaque along with QPCC executive member Colin Murray.

Gavaskar took time to greet a few of the fans in the Carib Beer Stand including popular vendor Jumbo, who is famous for selling peanuts.

Jumbo even sang Relator’s song for Gavaskar.

In April 1971, an inexperienced Gavaskar scored 124 in the first innings and 220 in the second innings of the fifth Test match at the Queen’s Park Oval to help India earn a draw.

The draw was significant as it prevented West Indies from levelling the five-match Test series. India won the series 1-0 as four matches ended in a draw.

Gavaskar made his debut in the second Test match of the series, which was also played at the oval.
