Senior police are reminding the owners of licensed guns that their cars are not an appropriate means of storing their weapons or ammunition while they lime.

Speaking at the weekly police media briefing on Sackville Street, Port of Spain, on Thursday afternoon, ACP in charge of the criminal division Winston Maharaj said leaving a weapon unattended could cause it to fall into the hands of criminals.

"If you are going to the beaches, your vehicle is not the safest place to secure a firearm.

"I am advising your firearms be lodged at the closest police station and, on completion of your activity, you retrieve it and go on to your home."

Maharaj added that FUL holders could possibly face charges of negligence if their weapon was lost or stolen.

Also attending the media briefing was Snr Supt of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Unit Clint Arthur who urged the public to act responsibly and exercise caution when attending activities for the Easter weekend.

For hikers and campers, Arthur advised them to check-in at their nearest police station and give the officers contact information and details on where they intended to camp.

He also urged visitors of different areas to walk with safety equipment like first aid kits, flaslights and a fire extinguisher. He also encouraged them to follow the instructions of lifeguards.
