Transport minister tours projects in east Trinidad, meets with taxi drivers
On Saturday, Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan and other ministry representatives visited several projects in East Trinidad and met with taxi drivers on a reroute owing to road works.
Sinanan and his team first stop at Point Radix, Mayaro, to view a coastal erosion project being done under the ministry's Coastal Protection Unit.
A statement from the ministry said this project consists of emergency works, including the construction of a 50-metre rubble masonry wall to protect the most critical areas where the roadway is at risk.
"The project is currently in the design phase and is awaiting the submission of a geotechnical report to inform the final design," the statement said.
Sinanan spoke with Mayaro residents at well as Mayaro MP Rushton Paray on his second stop in the district.
Sinanan discussed the proposed work for the community, which includes road works, drainage, bridge reconstruction, and coastal protection works.
There are about 19 road projects scheduled to begin in the area.
The statement added, "The execution of these projects and ongoing engagement with the community form part of the ministry's commitment to rebuilding our infrastructure together."
The minister also met with taxi drivers of the Sangre Grande to Mayaro route to discuss the issues surrounding the temporary diversion for the Manzanilla Mayaro Road.
They came to a consensus on the interim measures that can be implemented to alleviate the challenges taxi drivers and the wider community face.
The ministry's technical team reminded the group of the peculiarities of the area and the environmental factors that must be considered in developing a sustainable design moving forward.
The project's design for the roadway reconstruction is 90 per cent complete.
